Pluckley Sports Association

Plans are under way for a sports pavilion to be built on Pluckley Recreation Ground near the tennis courts. The cost of this venture is in the region of £75,000 and already nearly £65,000 has been raised, most with the help and enthusiasm of Pluckley Cricket Club. Applications are continuing to be made to grant providers. Once finished the pavilion will be available to all village organisations.
If you can assist in any way with expertise or by giving financial help please contact the Hon Treasurer, Michael Cowdry on 01233 712695.

Pluckley Ride

The Pluckley Toll Ride was established to provide off-road riding for local horse riding members and day visitors under the umbrella of South Eastern Toll Rides. SETR was started in 1990 by a group of riders desperate for somewhere safe for their families to ride and the first ride was opened in Surrey.

SETR received charitable status in 1993 and in 2001 became a nationwide organisation changing its name to Toll Rides (off-road) Trust or TROT. In 1992 TROT acquired an office and a part time administrator. In 2006 the organisation has continued to expand and now has two full time and four part time staff and the number of rides continue to grow.
Two thirds of the rider’s membership fee is paid proportionally to the landowners and the remaining third goes to headquarters for administration expenses, way marks, hatbands etc. Each of the local rides is run by volunteers who liaise with riders, landowners, and HQ.

The Pluckley Ride opened in 1991 with 15 miles of riding tracks connecting a bridleway and two byways and a network of variable tracks linking to the villages of Bethersden, Egerton, Hothfield, Little Chart, Pluckley and Smarden. The route has extended to 25 miles, 18 farmers and landowners are in the scheme, and there are 150 riding members.

The Pluckley Ride flourishes and fulfils an increasingly important need as the roads become more hazardous every year.
Fun and fundraising
events take place on the Pluckley Ride periodically. Members are kept up to date with two newsletters a year. Volunteer work parties help to keep the tracks in the woodlands clear. A committee was formed in 2005 to pool ideas and share the responsibility of the Pluckley Ride.

The goodwill and co-operation from the landowners is exceptional and they and the horse riders have benefited from understanding each other’s difficulties. For more information contact TROT. telephone: 01233 840253.
