ATM’s
If you see a ‘JCB’ type excavator vehicle at a construction site, depot or road works where they are left overnight and within 300 metres of an ATM pass this information to NHW  liaison officers.

Anyone with Burglar Alarms should be aware that they need to register 2 keyholders. These should be registered with the Police and the Environmental Health Department. Failing to register leaves them vulnerable, if entry has to be made to silence the alarm.

Do PLEASE remember to pass Neighbourhood Watch messages
on to your neighbours if you know they are not on the email list.
There are many who do not have access to the internet and
we rely on you to help keep them informed.
Thank you.

South Kent police are issuing a warning to elderly people, following three similar incidents in Smarden and Folkestone.

On 30.5.08, between 13-14.00hrs a man knocked on an 80 year-old lady's front door in Radnor Park, Folkestone, and said that he was there to repair her garden fence. The lady let him in and the man told her to go into the cellar as he needed to hook up his equipment. She refused to do this, and then he asked her for two £10 notes for change, and she went upstairs to get her purse. The man followed her upstairs and asked her for more money, but she refused and told him to go downstairs and he left the house, saying he would return shortly, which he did not do.
It is not believed any cash was stolen.
The man is described as white, aged 35-40, 6' tall, short hair and clean-shaven and he spoke with a southern accent. He was wearing a navy blue polo shirt with an insignia, dark tracksuit bottoms, grey baseball cap and had a dusty appearance.

Between 15.30-16.00hrs at Downs Way, Folkestone a man called at the home of an 88 year-old lady, saying that he wanted to do some work in her garden. The lady said she had no money, but the man insisted that she had to have cash on her. He began to search through drawers and found her purse, stealing a quantity of cash from it before leaving.
The offender is described as white, aged 50, 5'6" tall, slim build, short straight fair hair, clean shaven, and he spoke with a Manchester accent. He was wearing a fawn coloured jacket and trousers.

On the same afternoon in Smarden, near Ashford between 15.25-15.55hrs, a man knocked on the back door of house belonging to an 89 year-old lady. She opened the door with the chain on but the man told her he was her neighbour and was let in. The man said he wanted change, for a large denomination note. The lady went into her bedroom and the man followed her, and grabbed her cash before running out of the house.
He is described as white with a tanned complexion, aged 30, mousey coloured hair worn swept back and clean-shaven. He was wearing navy blue trousers and a navy blue flannel jacket, and a baseball cap with a red and gold logo.

Police would like to speak to anyone who has information regarding these incidents. Contact South Kent police on 01303 289180.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111.

Trading Standards warn that if you purchase goods from a doorstep caller, you may get a better price. However, if the item breaks down, fails to work at all or it is unsafe, you would have no redress. If you purchased it from a store, you can take it back! Remember - if you can pay with a credit card and the cost of the item is over £100, you can make a claim via your card issuer (even if you pay it straight off when you get your bill).

Garden/Shed crime.

Dear all, I have today been made aware of a TV item this morning talking about
To put things into perspective 'Yes' there is a general increase in this type of crime at this time of year,
with the usual outlet for stolen property being local boot fairs.
A few simple steps could help prevent you from becoming a victim of crime.

  1. If you buy any packaged garden implement do not leave the box out to be disposed of with your normal rubbish collection. It advertises that you have a new product usually in your shed or outbuilding.
  2. Make sure you have a good quality lock on your shed or outbuilding door.
  3. .A real favourite is the theft of hanging baskets, these are very easily disposed of, to prevent this, consider securing the hanging basket to the wall bracket with a small chain and padlock, this should not be visible when your flowers are in bloom. It most certainly stops the opportunist thief.

I hope this helps you to have a crime free garden this summer.
many thanks
PC Mick Wright

Police investigating the circulation of counterfeit cash in the Ashford area have made four arrests.

Three of the men arrested, aged 17, 25 and 36 have been released on bail while officers make further inquiries
and one, aged 17, has been formally cautioned. In the meantime, people are still being urged to be vigilant as some forged £20 notes are still in circulation, and to follow this advice:
There are a number of ways in which you can check to see if a bank note is counterfeit.
Firstly feel the paper: if the note is in good condition it should be crisp and slightly rough and not waxy, limp or shiny.
It should carry a watermark of the Queen that can be seen when held to the light.
A genuine note has a thread embedded into the paper. When held to the light this should form a bold continuous line. Genuine banknotes are designed using fine lines and images should not appear in soft focus or fuzzy.
If you believe that someone has passed a counterfeit note
check it against the genuine one as this may help clear confusion.

It is a crime to try to pass or possess a banknote that you either know or think to be counterfeit.
If you inadvertently receive a note that you believe to be counterfeit, you should take it to the nearest police station.

Shops are within their rights to refuse banknotes that they think are fake;
we would urge shop assistants to contact us if they are suspicious of a customer.

If anyone has any information in relation to this matter please contact
Kent Police on 01233 611055 or Kent CrimeStoppers on 0800 555111.
