Housing in Pluckley

Pluckley has about 440 homes, although the February 1999 electoral register shows 419 households: some houses were not occupied in October 1998 when this register was compiled and some have been built since. Of the total, about 40% are detached homes, 25% semi-detached, 13% terraced, 20% bungalows and 2% are flats.

Thirteen of the bungalows were specially designed for elderly people. The council owns 43 properties while housing associations hold 27 - these are either outright or in shared equity. Seven homes now owned by the council pre-date the building of council housing.

Architecture

Over the years, the estate introduced many features; these include the Dering windows, Kent peg tile roofs, Kentish ragstone, and Pluckley bricks. About a quarter of the listed houses have the footings or first storey of Kentish ragstone and some have Dutch gables.

Following the Second World War council housing was urgently needed so brick and Airey houses were constructed. Further brick-built housing at Westfields replaced those in Shiplands while eight remain in Station Road. Two have been clad with brick and half are privately owned.

There are approximately 20 timber Colt houses supplied by the Bethersden factory - four of which have been destroyed by fire in the last 25 years.

Planning permission in the village has ranged from private extensions, conversion of redundant farm buildings, one-off housing and small-scale developments of two or three houses on suitable sites.
