The Friends of St Nicholas' Church

'The Friends' was formed in 1990 to raise money for the sole purpose of repair, restoration and refurbishment of Pluckley’s beautiful medieval church.

It enables agnostics, atheists, Roman Catholics, and those of other faiths to give money to this good cause with the guarantee that every single penny will be spent on the fabric of the church. The active members consist of people in each of these categories as well as Anglicans.

In addition to donations and covenants from members, regular fund raising events are held, drawing on a wide variety of people in the village who give their time and money in support. Recent examples include a Bridge Afternoon, A Night at the Races, a Sponsored Walk, and an annual Harvest Supper.

A total of £74,000 has been raised to date of which over £48,000 has been spent on various repairs and projects entirely connected with the Church. Amongst these has been essential repairs to the Church stonework, the refurbishment of the Churchyard Walls, repair to the steeple and the erection of a Memorial Gate at the Western approach to the Churchyard.

Pluckley Ringers

At the AGM of the Egerton & Pluckley Bellringers in June 2005, the ringers decided that there were now enough people to form separate teams so Pluckley Ringers, based at St Nicholas' Church, were reborn and continue to make progress led by new Tower Captain, Emma Selling. Kate Stevens and Phil Eaton were thanked for all their efforts keeping Pluckley going through thin times.

Since then Pluckley Ringers have recruited more learners and generally manage to raise a band to ring before the Sunday services at St Nicholas. They were especially pleased to be able to ring at Christmas having set this as a target for the learners amongst them - everyone had a go and it did not sound too bad!

In August the Pluckley Ringers had a barbecue. In conjunction with Egerton, in October they bopped at the Village Hop to the sounds of The Odyssey of Fran.

Parish Magazine

The Egerton-with-Pluckley Parish Magazine is a well-established monthly publication in A4 format, which is distributed to subscribers in both parishes by a team of volunteers, who go out in all weathers to bring this popular journal to residents.

600 copies are printed each month, and it has been estimated that up to three people in each household read it. There are a few copies on sale in both village general stores at 75p a copy. Subscriptions are £7.50 per year, including hand delivery, and a few are posted further afield at a cost of £13.50 p.a.

Due to its popularity the magazine is fortunate to attract plenty of advertisers. This, in turn, enables the number of pages to be increased to accommodate more editorial. Currently there are 40 pages plus covers. (One and a quarter pages of advertisements pays for two and three-quarter pages of editorial).

The editor is always pleased to receive articles for submission, although inclusion cannot be guaranteed. New advertisers are also always welcome, and a very favourable discount is offered to all who take space for six months of more and pay within 21 days of invoice.
